Museums in the Paulista region: check out the current exhibitions

MASP

The São Paulo Museum of Art, the most important in Brazil, is hosting the Volpi Popular exhibition from February 25 to June 5. The 20th century modernist artist Alfredo Volpi was born in Italy and moved to São Paulo as a child. His works had unique characteristics, a mixture of the modern and the traditional. The artist's style is marked by geometric abstractionism and an appreciation of color. The exhibition features more than one hundred memorable paintings covering Volpi's work throughout his career. 

Admission is free on Tuesdays, but you can choose the option of helping MASP by buying the ticket for R$ 25 or R$ 50 at website

Moreira Salles Institute 

The Moreira Salles Institute in São Paulo is showing the exhibition "Carolina Maria de Jesus: A Brazil for Brazilians". The exhibition tells the story of the writer from Minas Gerais and her journey over the years to publish her books. She became internationally known after the publication of her book "Quarto de Despejo" in 1960, which has been translated into more than 13 languages. As well as showing various other works by Carolina, the IMS is exhibiting two manuscripts by the writer and her work as a composer, circus artist and singer. The exhibition runs until March 27 and admission is free.

Itaú Cultural 

From December 11 until April 10, Itaú Cultural is hosting the exhibition "Tunga: Conjunções Magnéticas" (Tunga: Magnetic Conjunctions), which features more than 300 works by Antônio José de Barros Carvalho e Mello Mourão, known as Tunga.

There are drawings, sculptures, installations and objects in the exhibition that bring out the essence of the artist, who has taken part in four biennials in São Paulo, a biennial in Venice and had his work shown at the MoMA in New York, in London and also at the Inhotim Institute in Minas Gerais. Admission is free.

Fiesp Cultural Center 

From December 10, 2021 until May 29, 2022, the Fiesp Cultural Center will host the exhibition "Once Upon a Time, Modern", which brings together more than 300 works on Brazilian modernism and tells the story of how it took root in the country.

Visitors will be able to see works by pioneers of modernism in Brazil such as: Oswald de Andrade, Anita Malfatti, Tarsila do Amaral, Di Cavalcanti, Gilberto Freyre and many other artists. Admission is free.

Japan House

Until March 6, Japan House is hosting the "Blows" exhibition, a project that features more than 300 utilitarian glass pieces with a modern design. All the pieces are made in the style of Edo Glass, craft techniques developed between the 17th and 19th centuries and to this day is a symbol of Tokyo's production. Admission is free.
