What is sustainable transportation?

The aim of this term is to unite strategies so that the population can move around using transport that doesn't cause too much damage to the environment. With car transportation, traffic has been damaged, there has been an increase in environmental issues and a high cost of fuel. So the proposal for sustainable transport would be to use means other than cars and motorcycles, such as: public transport such as buses, trains, subways or individual use such as bicycles, scooters, among others. 

The importance of sustainable transport

But what is the importance of this form of transportation? Despite being a simple switch, using other means of transportation reduces traffic accidents, pollutants and noise pollution. The greater the number of people who use cars, the greater the generation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, causing an increase in global warming. 

If everyone opted for sustainable transportation most days, traffic would flow quickly and naturally, the generation of pollutants would be reduced and the high cost of fuel could be used for other needs. In addition, it is essential to mention the health benefits generated by sustainable transport: if someone chooses to use a bicycle or to walk somewhere, for example over short distances, they will already be exercising, combating a sedentary lifestyle and maintaining a healthier routine. 

The fact that you won't spend hours in traffic and will be able to use that time for other leisure activities can also be highlighted as a healthy option, as stress will be reduced and you'll have more time to enjoy each day. 

You can see that a simple act can bring about a significant change in people's well-being and in the preservation of the environment. Having people who are aware of and care about these causes brings a wave of people influenced and engaged to maintain the same stance. 

That's why it's so important for companies, for example, to broaden their strategies towards sustainable guidelines, since many people depend on transportation to get to work. Encouraging the use of bicycles can come in the form of investment in bike lanes, bike racks or even the provision of benefits that enable the use of shared bicycles. 

There are countless ways to avoid the harm caused by unsustainable transportation, but it is necessary to have a society that understands how beneficial it is physically and mentally to maintain sustainable habits.
