Architectural dictionary: understand what happens on your site!

Have you ever been in the middle of a construction project and, at some point, heard a term that you didn't understand? It's common in architecture for some terms to be used that can confuse those who aren't familiar with the field.

Cluster 

Compacted sawdust board, glued and pressed between two wooden boards.

Adobe

A type of brick made from sand, clay, vegetable fiber and manure, which must be covered with lime and sand during construction.

Porch

The extension of the roof that covers the entrance door.

Atrium

It's the courtyard at the entrance to the house.

Concrete

This is concrete, a mass made from cement, gravel, sand and water.

Doll

Masonry used to fix door or window frames.

Cistern

Water tank, including one that collects rainwater.

Skylight

Ornate

Pile supporting a dwelling over water.

Right foot

Measurement used for the distance from the floor to the ceiling of a room.

Pergola

Decorative roofing in gardens and open spaces, usually with beams and pillars.

Pilotis

Set of support columns that leaves the first floor free.

Plumb

A device used to check the verticality or parallelism of walls, columns or pillars. 

Ruff

Sheet placed on the roof between the masonry and the water, protects against infiltration.

Gravel

Coarse reddish or yellow sand is part of the mortar composition.

Siphon

Part located at the outlet of toilets, sewers and drains, which prevents waste from returning.

Shaft

Internal gap used for passing pipes, wires and conductors.

Slope

Ramp or slope of land made by excavation.

Truss

It helps to support roofs, interlaced with wood.

Verga

Piece made of concrete or wood designed to support the continuation of the wall at the door.

Volute

An ornament in a spiral shape.
